After an intensive and inspiring climb of 6660 steps we arrived at the highest point of the Taishan mountain, or the “Jade Emperor Summit”. The peak was over 1500 meters high and characterized by the wide view of the foggy landscapes. The Taishan mountain is part of the five Sacred Mountains in China and is located in Shandong Province, which is also the birthplace of the great philosopher Confucius.
Around 4:00 am we were awakened by the hotel staff, on top of the mountain, to find a place along the misty paths to watch the sunrise. Due to the heavy fog, we have unfortunately not been able to experience an amazingly beautiful sunrise. But because of the many temples that slowly loomed up in the very dense fog, it was still an almost surreal world that you looked at. Wondering how mighty beautiful Tai Shan is? The photo series below will take you on a journey to these heavenly peaks.
The story behind the sacred Taishan mountain in China
In ancient times it was necessary for the emperor, in order to be able to ascend the throne, to make a pilgrimage to the Taishan mountain. To then pray to heaven and important ancestors at the highest point. The story goes that 72 emperors have made pilgrimages here. These special ceremonies and offerings have made the mountain famous on a large scale. In addition, many poets and literary scholars also visited the mountain for inspiration. The grandiose temples, the numerous stone inscriptions and tablets are the best witnesses of these visits. In addition, the mountain has also played an important role in the development of Buddhism and Taoism.
A spectacular natural landscape surrounded the Taishan mountain
In addition to historical remains, this mountain also offers a unique natural landscape. The high peaks, deep valleys, spectacular waterfalls, enchanting rocks and the ancient pines and cypresses give the feeling of being in heaven. The four wonders here are sunrises from the east, the sunset glow, the sea of clouds and the golden belt along the Yellow River. The Taishan mountain embodies the fascinating Chinese culture and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1987.
